Dagestan authorities supported the idea of privatization of Makhachkala commercial seaport. The day before, on March, 19, the Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree establishing North-South JSC and transferring 100% of the seaport's shares to it. According to the head of the region, Sergei Melikov, this decision will mark a turning point in the fortunes of the port, which for a long time changed owners and did not operate at full capacity.

According to Melikov, after privatization the port's efficiency will triple, new jobs will be created and tax revenues will increase.

Technical upgrading of sea port equipment and reconstruction of existing berths will be carried out, a new container terminal will be opened and the construction of Makhachkala sea customs checkpoint will be completed, experts say. Besides, the construction of a railway marshalling yard capable of handling up to 100 wagons per day and a 6.7 km access road to the port will be completed.
