Russian scientists to study wool of Dagestani mountain sheep

A seminar on the quality of wool of Dagestani mountain sheep breed has taken place in Gunibsky municipal district of the republic. The event was held by Nikolai Belik, a researcher of the laboratory of the All-Russian Research Institute of Breeding.The Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food of Dagestan, Emin Shaykhgasanov, as well as the representatives of regional agricultural organizations, heads of sheep farming enterprises and others, attended the event.

During the seminar, Nikolai Belik explained that approximately 2,000 wool samples would be collected for research at breeding farms in Dagestan. Belik  noted that the leaders of the Federation Council and the Ministry of Agriculture had already joined efforts to promote and process wool.  

"Our task is to collect samples, study them and obtain parameters that are characteristic of the wool of Dagestani mountain breed. This information could provide a significant boost to the improvement of breeding efforts in the region" - Belik said. Belik also pointed out the importance of Dagestan mountain sheep breed and the good prospects for marketing its wool.

"Dagestan Mountain Sheep is a purebred and one of the best in Russia. It is the only breed adapted to mountainous conditions and has excellent wool properties" - the scientist said . Emin Shaykhgasanov, in turn, assured the scientist that the sheep farms in the republic were ready to cooperate and provide all necessary samples.
