The Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a federal law on the confiscation of property acquired as a result of or used in the dissemination of knowingly false information about the Russian Armed Forces and calls for actions against Russia's security.

Those guilty of committing crimes against the security of the Russian Federation will be subject not only to criminal punishment, but also to such a measure of a criminal-legal nature as confiscation of property acquired as a result of unlawful activity or used to commit or finance crimes.

As part of this measure, the Criminal Code and the Code of Criminal Procedure are being updated accordingly. The document states that the confiscation of financial means or property may be imposed for activities that are deemed to be against Russia's security, public insults, and discrediting the army.

According to the first deputy chairman of the Constitutional Committee of the Federation Council, Vladimir Poletaev, the law is intended primarily to “have a preventive effect” on certain individuals. “The current system remains unchanged and the confiscation continues to be a measure of criminal-legal influence that is designed to prevent further crimes or have a preventive effect. The new law expands the list of crimes to include those against the security of the Russian Federation in addition to the terrorist and extremist crimes” – Poletaev says .
