International festival of folklore and traditional culture "Highlanders" kicks off in Dagestan

Makhachkala, June 19, 2018. The international festival of folklore and traditional culture "Highlanders" has kicked off on Sunday in Makhachkala. This year the festival is held for the eighth time and is dedicated to the 95th anniversary of the national poet of Dagestan Rasul Gamzatov.

The creative groups from Azerbaijan, India, Slovakia, Poland, Romania and more than 10 regions of Russia take part in the festival this year.

Within the opening ceremony of the festival, a parade of creative teams of the participating countries and a gala concert were held. More than 400 participants of the festival in national dresses participated in the folklore parade on Rasul Gamzatov Prospekt. The international festival "Highlanders" is held in Dagestan from June 16 to 23. Its main mission is the preservation and development of the distinctive national culture of the peoples of Dagestan, Russia and the world through the interethnic cultural dialogue. Within the framework of the festival folklore, choreographic, vocal, instrumental ensembles, folk circus studios, masters of arts and crafts and folk crafts from more than 40 regions and cities of the republic present the cultural traditions of more than 30 peoples of Dagestan.
