Dagestan Among Russian Regions with Lowest Alcohol Consumption

MAKHACHKALA, May 15 – RIA "Dagestan". In April 2026, alcohol consumption in Dagestan amounted to 0.9 liters of pure alcohol per person, according to data from the Unified Interdepartmental Information and Statistical System (EMISS).

This represents one of the lowest rates in the country. Only the Chechen Republic (0.02 L) and Ingushetia (0.63 L) recorded lower consumption levels. For comparison, Russia's national average in 2025 was 8.06 liters of pure alcohol per person—24% lower than a decade earlier (10.6 L in 2016). The highest consumption levels were recorded in the Nenets Autonomous Okrug (18.2 L), Jewish Autonomous Oblast (14.76 L) and Chukotka (14.17 L).

Alexander Stavtsev, Vice President of the Russian Association of Retail Market Experts, explained that such statistics in the Northern Caucasus are partly linked to cultural and religious attitudes toward alcohol. "In Dagestan, for example, there is no strict regional anti-alcohol policy. However, there are several retail chains that do not sell alcohol at all" – the top manager noted.

Experts note that low alcohol consumption in the region correlates with broader public health indicators and reflects the influence of traditional values alongside voluntary market practices. These factors contribute to Dagestan's distinctive profile within Russia's national landscape of alcohol consumption trends.
