Derbent, April 20, 2020. A plane tree, growing in the courtyard of Juma mosque in the city of Derbent, has been nominated for the contest “The Best Tree of Russia” the press service of the Forestry Committee of the Republic informs.
“The tree of the year will be evaluated not by its beauty, but by size, age and an interesting life story” the department official said. It is noted that in 2019 a poplar from Kalmykia became the contest winner.

Since 2017, the Russian Federation has been participating in the prestigious international competition for the selection of the European Tree of the Year. The purpose of this competition is to point out the importance of old-growth trees in the natural and cultural heritage that deserves care and protection. Unlike other competitions, the European Tree of the Year does not focus on beauty, size or age, but on the history of the tree and its relationship with people.

Last year, a poplar from Kalmykia was elected as the contender for the right to receive an honorary title from Russia. In the competition "European Tree of the Year" the organizers annually look for a tree with the most interesting history.
