According to survey of the National Rating Agency, the regions of the country were ranked according to their performance in sustainable tourism development. All the regions were assessed both in terms of the environmental factor and infrastructure, economic blocks, climate and other factors.

For example, a number of regions in the North Caucasian Federal District took high positions and their level of tourism development was classified as 'developed'. In particular, Kabardino-Balkaria and the Stavropol Territory received this rating.

However, Dagestan (ranked 75th) and Ingushetia (ranked 72nd) were rated as "underdeveloped". "Despite the fact that in recent years Dagestan has been displaying a dynamic development of tourism and the growth of tourist inflow, this leads to growth sickness and "overtourism", when the industry does not keep up with the number of visitors" - the study runs.
