Makhachkala, July 22, 2018. The day before, on July 21, the head of the Agency for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Dagestan Zaur Kakhrimanov met with historians from the neighboring Georgia Tornike and Roin Diasamidze, the press service of the agency informed.

The foreigners came to Dagestan to study the ancient Christian temple of Datong, built once by the Georgian missionaries.

Tornike Diasamidze shared that he is writing a doctoral thesis on the temples of the Northern Caucasus. "Now I am collecting scientific and research materials" - the guest said. In turn, the government official spoke about the work being done in the region to preserve the historical objects and to make them popular among the tourists.

"On April 18, my colleagues from the administration of Shamilsky municipal district held a subbotnik on the territory of the Datong Temple. It was dated to the International Day for the Preservation of Monuments and Historic Sites. At this facility, the administration has already done certain work: a road sign to the temple has been laid, the entrance and the fence of the temple have been stylistically decorated. Annually more than 500 tourists visit the monument" - Kakhrimanov said.

Recall, the Datong Temple is the oldest Orthodox church, located in Shamilsky municipal district of Dagestan near the village of Datong, at the bottom of a deep stone gorge. It is composed of blocks of yellow sandstone. The thick-seamed masonry of walls is made with mortar. The church was erected by Georgian missionaries presumably in the late 10th - early 11th centuries and is a unique monument of medieval architecture on the territory of Dagestan.
