Dagestan hosts IX International Festival of Folklore and Traditional Culture "Highlanders"

Makhachkala, June 29, 2019. From June 28 to July 5, Dagestan hosts the IX International Festival of Folklore and Traditional Culture "Highlanders". It has been held since 2004 with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation and the State Russian House of Folk Art named after V.D. Polenov. The festival has become the main creative platform in the field of folk art, included by UNESCO into the Calendar of international folklore projects. Since 2012 the event is annually held under the auspices of the organization.

Over the years, about 40 art groups from the foreign countries in Europe, South America, Asia, and the Middle East participated in the festival. Besides, the event attracts participants from different regions of Russia. This year the creative groups from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Serbia, Iran, India, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan take part in the festival. More than 50 folklore groups arrived from the regions of Russia and the Republic of Dagestan.

The program of the festival "Highlanders" promises to be bright, rich and memorable. It will include multi-genre artistic and creative projects: the gala concerts “My Russia is My Dagestan”, the fairs and courtyards of folk artists “My native village”, “Poetry of national costume”, “Festival cards”, the festival of circus art “Paglaman”, the festival of ashug song “Sing, ashug!”, the festival of Azerbaijani culture “Sevinj”, the festival of national amateur theaters “Theater of traditions”, the festival of the Caspian flotilla “Caspian Sea - shores of friendship”, the festival of folk music “Play, soul!”, the festival of folk song performers “Dagestan springs”, as well as a photo exhibitions, workshops, etc.

The festival of the Administration of the city of Makhachkala "Caucasus - a single family" has acquired a special significance, united the North Caucasus regions and brightly woven them into the festival "Highlanders". Folklore ensembles of guests from foreign countries and Russian regions will present the cultural diversity of the peoples of Russia and the world.

The festival "Highlanders" has been performing its mission to preserve and develop the samples of intangible cultural heritage, folk culture in its identity, traditions and national character for 16 years. The exchange of cultural traditions among different nations determines the international value of the festival, contributes to the preservation and development of the intangible cultural heritage of the country.

It is planned that the IX International Festival of Folklore and Traditional Culture "Highlanders" will gather more than 12 thousand spectators, both residents of the republic and its guests. After all, the festival is always a bright holiday, lively communication that helps representatives of the same department of different regions, countries and faiths to become like-minded people and friends.
