MAKHACHKALA, May 8 – RIA "Dagestan." Nariman Abdulmutalibov, Acting Vice Premier of the Republic of Dagestan, held a meeting on organizing the route of the "Journeys Along the Great Silk Road-2026" project through Russian territory. On May 24 - 29, 2026, the international delegation will travel through Dagestan, Kalmykia and Astrakhan Oblast as part of an initiative implemented under the UN Convention to Combat Desertification and timed to coincide with the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists. Discussions focused on transport logistics, linguistic support and coordination with specialists to ensure a productive visit for international guests.
Dagestan segment, scheduled for May 24–26, will showcase the region's distinctive livestock farming traditions and anti-desertification efforts. On the first day, experts will examine Dagestan's transhumance system through visits to mountain-zone farms demonstrating sustainable pastoral practices. The second day will feature tours of livestock enterprises in northern Dagestan, with presentations on land reclamation infrastructure and results from the state program aimed at bringing agricultural land into productive use.
The project provides a platform for knowledge exchange on sustainable land management, climate adaptation, and pastoral livelihood preservation. "We aim to share Dagestan's experience in balancing traditional land use with modern environmental challenges while learning from international best practices" Abdulmutalibov noted.
