Kaitag embroidery presented at International Festival "Highlanders" in Moscow

Makhachkala, May 31, 2018. The exhibition "Kaitag embroidery of Dagestan. The past and the present" opened on May 29 in Moscow, the news agency of the Republican House of Folk Art of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Dagestan informed.

The organizers of the event are the Russian National House of Folk Art named after V. Polenov and the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Dagestan. The exhibition features about 30 works by more than 10 skilled craftsmen. Among them there are the well-known needlewomen Aminat Ibiyeva, Raziyat Magomedova and Zubaydat Gasanova.

The Head of the Department of Decorative and Folk Art of the Research Institute of Theory and History of Fine Arts at the Russian Academy of Arts Alexander Grekov noted that the joint project strengthens and preserves the cultural heritage. "The Union of Artists of Russia and the House of Folk Art together are developing the national culture. This is the most important thing" - Grekov said.
The representative of Kaitagski district, a research associate of the Research Institute n.a. Sklifosovsky Ali Gasanov added that the masters of Kaitag create unique works included into museums and private collections in many countries around the world.

Director of the Center for Traditional Culture "Kaitagi" Zubaydat Hasanova pointed out that the Kaitag embroidery is an ancient female needlework generated in the XVII century. According to her, the women used Kaitag embroidery as an amulet protection for children. "We are very much in touch with our traditions. There was a time when the craft was forgotten. The book of English scientist Robert Chensiner gave an impetus for the revival of Kaitag embroidery. Later we received grants from the contest "Cultural mosaic" of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Dagestan" - Zubaydat Gasanova said.

At the end of the solemn opening ceremony of the exhibition, the guests tasted the national dishes of the Kaitag people, listened to the folk Dargin songs and the game on kumuz. It should be noted that the exhibition is held within the framework of the VIII International Festival of Folklore and Traditional Culture "Mountaineers" and will last until June 20.
