MAKHACHKALA, March 12 – RIA Dagestan. According to Acting Director of the Federal Agricultural Research Center of Dagestan Nariman Nimatulaev, the republic expects to introduce its first domestically developed potato varieties by 2027. Three promising varieties, cultivated in Kurakhsky and Akushinsky municipal districts, were submitted for state testing in 2025 and have already shown strong performance in field trials.
Beyond potatoes, the center has successfully developed 52 fruit tree varieties—including apricots and peaches—that have been transferred to commercial agricultural production. Two additional varieties, the "Pamyat Pokrovsky" apple and the "Maral" black sweet cherry, are currently undergoing state variety testing.
Nimatulaev also emphasized Dagestan's expanding role in seed production, noting successful sugar beet cultivation in the republic's southern regions as part of efforts to strengthen the region's agricultural self-sufficiency and innovation capacity.
