Makhachkala, September 11, 2014. Daghestan ministry of physical culture and sports met to discuss results of Daghestani athletes’ performance in the Caucasian Peoples’ Festival of Sports and Culture. The 5th festival was taking place in Grozny on 6-7 September.

259 athletes from 7 North Caucasus Federal District regions competed in 12 sports: relay race, arm wrestling, tug of war, rope climbing, walking on stilts, weight pulling, weight lifting, jumping double event, powerlifting, archery, mini football, and wrestling on belts.

Daghestani team placed 2nd in the total standings with 2 golds, 4 silvers, and 3 bronzes. The Chechen team performed the best (6-5-0) and team Kabardino-Balkaria finished third (2-2-3).

Daghestan minister of sports Magomed Magomedov highlighted the success of Daghestan mini-football squad who had defended their title of the best in the Caucasus winning the hosting team in the final. He added they needed to develop sports Daghestanis are lagging behind in, like rope climbing, belt wrestling and arm wrestling.

The minister said the next Caucasian peoples’ festival is likely to be held in Daghestan with 14 sports instead of 12.
