Cyprus, December 4, 2014ю Dagestani weightlifter Assali Abdulgashumov, a member of the Russian youth team, won the European championship held in Cyprus November 20-29, athlete’s coach Halil Mirzoyev told RIA "Dagestan".

"In the double-event of the 62 weight, Abdulgashumov’s total was 281 kg (126 kg in the snatch and 155 kg in the clean and jerk). This result allowed him to finish first - far ahead of Romanian and Italian athletes who placed second and third respectively. Assali could make a better weight, but he refused to, although he showed 170 kg at the training sessions," the coach commented.

"Assali was the only Dagestani in the Russian team at the contest. He had qualified for the tournament in Cyprus by showing a good performance at the Russian championship in Vladikavkaz in April, 2014. He also placed third at the national championship for adults. He was eager to win, but the elbow injury wouldn’t let him do that. We will be training with an eye on the gold medal of the Russia championship-2015, which will most likely be held in Dagestan. If he wins the national championship, then we’ll plan as far as the world championship."- Halil Mirzoyev added.

Totally, the Russian team won 17 golds, 6 silvers and a bronze at the continental tournament.
