Makhachkala, July 7, 2017. According to the official website of the Year of Ecology in Russia, the first geological park of UNESCO in Russia can appear in the Republic of Dagestan. The status of the geopark is expected to be granted to the Sary-kum barkhan and the adjacent Narat-Tube ridge.

"The creation of еру geological park on the territory of the Sary Kum barkhans and the Narat-Tubinsky ridge will ensure the preservation of a rather unique biological diversity for this area. The most of the flora and fauna existing on the barkhan are the Red Data Book species. For example, the largest population of eagles and falcons in the entire North Caucasus inhabit the Narat-Tube Bay, the director general of the "Center for Nature of the Caucasus" Renata Shushaite is quoted saying.

The geological park of UNESCO refers to the territory that includes one or several areas that are of big interest from the scientific point of view, not only because of geological features, but also for their archaeological, ecological and cultural values.
