Kumtorkalinskiy district, August 11, 2014. The Sarykum Dune has been included in the ethnic guided tour "Caucasian Gates at the Worlds’ Crossroads" which is a part of the international historical and cultural project of China and the CIS countries called "Silk Route", the press service of the Kumtorkali region’s administration told RIA "Dagestan".

"The Daghestan Tourism Committee is working out the tourist route which starts at the Kalmykian border and then runs through Daghestan to end at the Azerbaijani border. The Sarykum Dune - Europe's largest sand dune and the highest single sand hill in the world – located in Kumtorkali region, 25 km from Makhachkala, is one of the route points," the source said. The Kumtorkali region’s administration is developing the excursion schedule, tourist accommodation, and souvenirs. Much attention is paid to the route’s security.

The Sarykum Dune is a unique monument of Daghestani nature recognized by geologists as the second largest dune in the world. The largest one is Sahara’s Grand Erg Oriental. Europe and Asia’s Sarykum is  12 km long, 4 km wide, 252 m tall with total area of 600 hectares.

The dune is a marvel due to its huge sand mass placed in no desert or beach, but on a clay steppe. Its climate is also unique. This is the only place in Daghestan with average 20°C from late spring to early autumn. The hot summer months bring up to 60°C – a really hot place.

The "Silk Route" project aims at preserving and promoting historical and cultural heritage, developing cultural and educational tourism through a network of cultural and educational tourist routes in the historical and geographical corridor of the Silk Route, developing inter-regional cooperation in culture and tourism, and strengthening partnerships.
