Makhachkala, April 17, 2017. Sarykum barkhans - the natural complex claims the status of a geopark under the auspices of UNESCO. This issue has been discussed at the meeting of Dagestan Minister of Tourism and Folk Art Rabiyat Zakavova with the representatives of the Autonomous Non-Profit Organization (ANO) "Caucasus Nature Center".

The deputy director general of the ANO, Saadu Kaziev said that the project manager Kirill Morozov had come to Dagestan to develop the concept of the project for assigning the status of the geopark to the unique natural complex "Sarykum barkhans".  

Sarykum barkhans are the highest barkhans in Europe, located in 15 km from Makhachkala.For the present time, there are 113 geoparks in the world, but there is not one in Russia. The UNESCO project gives advantages for improving the infrastructure at the site of the tourist display, branding, mentioning in the materials of the world organization.

The representatives of the "Caucasus Nature Center " offer Dagestan Ministry of Tourism and Folk Art to cooperate in improving the tourist infrastructure. For example to construct Makhachkala-Buinaksk road and to reconstruct the old railway station near Sarykum barkhans.

Recall that the  heads of the regions of the North Caucasus, including Dagestan, in September last year signed an agreement with the " Caucasus Nature Center" on cooperation to preserve and to popularize the unique natural complexes.
