Makhachkala, June 21, 2017. ANO "Center for Nature of the Caucasus", Institute of Ecology and Evolution named after Severtsov RAS and Dagestan State Nature Reserve will create a center for studying and rehabilitation of the Caspian seals in the territory of the Republic of Dagestan, the press service of the Resorts of the North Caucasus reports.

The project will contribute to the inclusion of Dagestan Reserve in the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves, which in turn will allow developing programs for studying, protecting and monitoring the flora and fauna of the region. The project to save the Caspian seals listed in the Red Book, the only mammal of the Caspian Sea, will become one of the key projects of the new reserve.

The new center will study the biology of the species, the state of the population and the factors of its reduction. The Center will carry out the environmental education activities, working with the population of the republic, identify affected animals on the ground, assist them and, if necessary, transport them to the center.

"Now the affected animals and abandoned young seals whose parents died practically do not have a chance to survive, therefore, together with partners, we initiate a project to build a center for studying and rehabilitation of the Caspian seal," - explained Renata Shushaite, CEO of the Caucasus Center for Nature.
