Pink flamingos appear at Aji Lake in Dagestan

Makhachkala, November 8, 2016. Two flocks of pink flamingo, consisted of 20 birds have appeared at AjiIn Lake in Kayakentsky district of Dagestan, the press-service of Dagestan ministry of natural resources and ecology reports.

In general, the arrival of flamingos to Dagestan is a natural occurrence, but these birds have been seen for the first time at Aji Lake. According to the senior researcher at the Laboratory of Animal Ecology of the Caspian Basin Institute of Biological Resources, Yevgeny Vilkov, this happened due to the environmental rehabilitation of the lake, initiated by Dagestan Ministry of Environment.

"The flamingos are found in Dagestan during their migration from a nesting into a wintering areas and back. Usually, the pink flamingos make a stopover at such places as Sulak Lagoon, South Agrakhan Lake but now, thanks to the rehabilitation of Aji Lake, they stayed here", - Vilkov noted.

The ornithologist pointed out that with the advent of lagoons and after the rehabilitation of some lakes in the republic, a cascade of water rights served as stopovers and nesting of various species of birds were formed, including those who have never appeared in Dagestan - for example, a northern solan, inhabiting in the Nordic countries.
