Makhachkala, June 17, 2014. Today, more than 100 people participated in voluntary blood donation campaign in Makhachkala as part of the World Donor Day, a source in Daghestan ministry of education, science and youth policy told RIA "Daghestan". People could donate blood at the Daghestan Blood Transfusion Station and at a mobile blood bank established in the city center, next to the House of Friendship. The donors got gifts and souvenirs.

Not only common Makhachkala residents but also health care professionals, local authorities, media people, staff of Daghestan Centre for Medical Prevention, and officials from the Makhachkala committee on sports, tourism and youth affairs participated in the event.

A lot of people came to donate blood to be a part of saving someone's life. Public service advertising and the information about the campaign in mass media and social networks had greatly contributed to the campaign’s success.

The World Donor Day is a special day celebrated to honour blood donors. It is aimed at raising awareness about the need for safe blood and blood products and it is a ‘thank you’ to those who voluntarily donate their blood to save lives. The day is coordinated by the World Health Organization, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the International Society of Blood Transfusion and the International Federation of Blood Donor Organizations.
