Makhachkala, March 20, 2014. Daghestani project of the "Hunzkah" nature park has been approved by the state examination, the press service of the region’s administration told RIA "Daghestan".

Creating a new nature park in Daghestan was a scientific authorities’ initiative after surveying the territory of the Arzhuta ridge and assessing the region’s natural habitats. In particular, scientists pointed out a large number of rare species of animals and plants in Hunzakh region.

In 2010, the Hunzakh region’s administration addressed to Daghestan ministry of natural resources and environment with the idea to create a natural park. Within the long-term cooperation with the Environment Ministry, the WWF supported the idea and provided a grant to conduct a comprehensive environmental survey of the territory, prepare supporting materials, and go through a state examination.

The "Hunzakh" natural park occupies 3,068 ha in total. A relatively small area revealed 643 species of higher plants, 142 species of vertebrates including 32 species listed in the Red Book of Russia and Daghestan. The park will help preserve the unique natural complexes, rare plant species (common yew, Overin myuhlenbergella, beautiful feather grass, fork-shaped iris, etc.) and animals (Caucasian carabus, fragrant calosoma beetle, golden eagle, bearded vulture, griffon, black vulture, Caucasian snowcock, lesser horseshoe bat, Near Eastern leopard, etc.) The park will also be part of Hunzakh region’s recreational development.
