Last veteran of Great Patriotic War - Hero of Russia passes away in Makhachkala

Makhachkala, April 19, 2016. The last veteran of the Great Patriotic War living in the republic awarded with the title of the Hero of the Russian Federation Magomed Gamzatov has passed away in Dagestani administrative center – Makhachkala, the press service of Head and the government of Dagestan reports.

"On April 15, 2016, the 98-year old Hero of the Russian Federation, the veteran of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 Magomed Usmanovich Gamzatov passed away" – the press release runs.
The Head of Dagestan Ramazan Abdulatipov and the members of the republican government expressed deep condolences to the family and friends of the veteran.

Magomed Gamzatov was born November 10, 1918 in the village of Huduts located in Dakhadayevsky District of the republic. In 1938 he was drafted into the Red Army. Gamzatov served in the Belorussian Special Military District. He began his military way as the assistant platoon commander and was promoted to commander of the infantry battalion.
