Sfax, Tunisia, April 10, 2015. A turbine for a geothermal power plant developed by head of the Dagestan State Technical University’s department of physics Ganapi Akhmedov was awarded the gold medal of the 3rd Tunis Innova international invention exhibition which was held in Sfax, Republic of Tunisia, the press service of the university told RIA Dagestan.

The forum was organized by the Arab-African Research Association to attract inventors from Algeria, Belgium, Italy, Libya, Poland, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, France, South Korea, and other countries.
The Russian collective stand showcased 19 innovations by inventors from Moscow, Belgorod, Vologda, Krasnodar, Rostov-on-Don, Rybinsk, Sevastopol, and Makhachkala.

The innovative development – a turbine for a geothermal power plant – made by the Dagestan inventor relates to the heat power industry, in particular, to facilities using geothermal heat in the form of a gas-steam-water mixture with increased salinity. Use of the turbine is driven by the need of commissioning many idle and fresh fields of high-potential thermal waters. This design helps prevent calcium carbonate from depositing on the surface of the turbine, thereby increasing its service life and ensuring smooth operation of the power plant.

From an economic point of view, the use of the turbine for the geothermal power plant only in one geothermal waters field with 160°C at the mouth of the well with a flow rate of 10,000 cubic meters per day will save 3-5 million rubles a year.

The salon has attracted attention of businesses and academia from Tunisia and other participating countries. An independent international jury highly appraised the Russian developments awarding them medals and diplomas of honour.
