Dagestan to immortalize memory of navigator Yevgeny Gvozdev

Makhachkala, November 30, 2016. A competition for the design of monument to the famous navigator Yevgeny Gvozdev has been announced in Dagestan. The monument will be installed in Makhachkala, the chairman of the competition committee, the deputy head of the Regional Media Development Centre "Caspian Media" Alik Abdulgamidov says.

"The Regional Media Development Centre "Caspian Media", TV company “Sea TV” and the Makhachkala History Museum announced an open competition for the design of monument devoted to the legendary Russian navigator and traveler Yevgeny Gvozdev” - Abdulgamidov is quoted saying.

"Yevgeny Gvozdev had proudly carried flag of Dagestan across the seas and oceans. Everywhere, Gvozdev told that he was from Dagestan. Our republic should be proud of this great man. By the way, the idea to erect a monument to the legendary countryman belongs to the general public, and I am sure that Dagestani officials will support the idea"- Abdulgamidov concluded.

Recall, Yevgeny Gvozdev was born in Pinsk (Belarus) in 1934. Since 1949 he lived in Makhachkala. Having graduated Astrakhan naval school, he had been working as a ship mechanic on large fishing vessels of the Caspian Sea for 35 years. On July 7, 1992 Yevgeny went to his first solo circumnavigation on the yacht "Lena" (class "micro") from Makhachkala, successfully completing it on July 19, 1996.

The second circumnavigation Gvozdev made from July 2, 1999 to July 10, 2003 on a 3.7-meter yacht "Said" constructed on the balcony of his apartments.
The 74-year-old Yevgeny Gvozdev started his third trip around the world on September 19, 2008 on a yacht Getan II (length - 5,5 m, width - about 2.5 m). On December 10, 2008 his body with a deep head wound was found on a beach in the south of Italy. His boat was found washed up on the shore in the same area. The traveler was buried in the military cemetery in Makhachkala.
