Makhachkala, December 1, 2014. The Russian Federal Service on Customers' Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing Surveillance will hold a few awareness-raising public events for young people to support HIV-illed persons in Dagestan on the World AIDS Day annually celebrated on December 1, the press service of the watchdog told RIA "Dagestan".

In Dagestan, HIV incidence remains a critical issue. The main cause of HIV infection in the republic is sexual transmission (68.8% of cases), drug use (25.7%), and from mother to child (3.5%). The high HIV risk group includes drug addicts, persons with sexually transmitted infections, and the imprisoned ones.
Accordingly, it is essential to make preclinical research for HIV among risk groups and the general population to detect the disease at an early stage and provide timely therapy thus increasing effectiveness of the treatment.

The World AIDS Day held annually on December 1 is a reminder of the need to consolidate the governmental and public efforts to minimize the devastating effects of the HIV epidemic. The motto of the World AIDS Day in 2014 is "Narrow the gap" to reduce the difference between the numbers of HIV-infected people with good and no access to HIV prevention in order to put an end to the epidemic by 2030.

According to the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS, since the start of the epidemic, there are 78 million HIV-infected people in the world, nearly half of them died from diseases related to HIV, including tuberculosis, which is still the leading cause of death with the virus.

Year after year, the number of HIV-infected people is steadily increasing affecting more and more people, so preventive measures ought to be accompanied by protecting human rights and reducing stigma and discrimination against HIV-infected people at all levels.
