Makhachkala, October 14, 2014. American writer and ethnographer Dave Haighton met with students of the DSTU faculty of engineering and economics, department of business and marketing, in the Central Library of Makhachkala, the press service of the university reports.

Five years ago, Haighton won a grant to conduct ethnographic research, so he arrived in Dagestan with his wife and two children. All this time he was studying the history of the culture and life of Daghestani ethnic groups and peoples, capturing his observations in books about the republic. He is regularly published in the "Ethno-Travel" journal and "The New York Times".

The ethnographer said he got really used to the unknown and thus frightening region before he got to know it. Later, he fell in love with the local culture, nature, traditions and people. In the United States, Dave studied Daghestani traditions only from books; now he often goes to the mountains, visits ancient villages, and sees historical places.

The scientist talked a lot about his experience and answered a lot of students’ questions about his impressions, research, leisure time, favourite Daghestani dishes, everyday communication, and how he reveals the world of Daghestan for his countrymen in the USA.
It was a lively and really interesting conversation.
