Makhachkala, April 29, 2014. On April 28, Russian President Vladimir Putin met with members of the Federal Assembly’s Board of Legislators in Petrozavodsk. Here, Khizri Shikhsaidov was representing Daghestan.

Participants discussed the progress of implementing president’s decrees of May, his December President’s Address, issues of Crimea and Sevastopol’s integration in the Russian Federation, and some local government issues.

The Russian president congratulated the legislators on the Russian Parliamentarism Day and wished them further fruitful work for the benefit of Russia and the people. The Board of Legislators must act as a lobbyist for regional interests also helping the 2 new Russian regions of Crimea and Sevastopol adapt to a single economic, social, and humanitarian space, Vladimir Putin said.

Putin noted that the Board of Legislators not only should become a platform for exchanging ideas and best regional practices. It is critical that they hold zero readings of legislative initiatives at the expert level. The lawmakers should pay particular attention to local government issues, balanced regional budgets and other issues, he said.

Then, heads of parliaments exchanged views on the legislative process development and pointed out the urgent problems faced by the region: developing industry and agriculture, and reducing unemployment.
