Iranian ambassador to Russia pays working visit to Derbent

Makhachkala, October 10, 2016. The day before, on October 9, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Iran to the Russian Federation Mehdi Sanai paid a working visit to the city of Derbent. As it informed, the vice-chairman of the Government of Dagestan, Shamil Isayev, the deputy of Dagestan National Assembly Magomedhan Aratsilov and other officials, accompanied the distinguished guest.

Firstly, the Iranian Ambassador Mehdi Sanai met with the mayor of Derbent Malik Bagliev. The mayor told the guests about the works being done in Derbent for the development of city infrastructure; the reconstruction of city streets, parks, as well as the restoration of historical and architectural monuments. Besides, Derbent became the place of pilgrimage for many tourists from all over the world.

According to Malik Bagliev, the work is being continued, the promising investment projects are implemented in the city, including the construction of a bypass road, which would relieve the central streets of traffic congestion.

Iranian ambassador noted that he had already been in Derbent in the late 90-ies of the last century, and he was pleasantly surprised by the great changes taken place in the city. Mehdi Sanai pointed out that Iran and Dagestan had had much in common: many national, cultural traditions, values and the ancient Derbent resembled Iran very much.  

Besides, the Iranian Ambassador informed the participants that the ambitious project called "Green Corridor" was currently implementing in Dagestan. It is an unprecedented example of cooperation between the two countries, which will help to strengthen the economic ties between Russia and Iran.

Mehdi Sanai expressed hope that the cultural and good-neighborly relations between our countries would continue to develop at a rapid pace. In this regard, a big role could play Makhachkala seaport and the port cities of Iran.

Then, the guests were shown a video about the ancient city of Derbent, 2000 anniversary of the city and its hospitable residents and numerous visitors.

At the conclusion, the guests visited the Naryn-Kala citadel, one of the oldest in the world Juma Mosque and other places of interest.
