Makhachkala, November 17, 2016. The Valaam Monastery Choir presented a music and poetry program "Light of Valaam" to the residents and guests of Makhachkala, the press service of Makhachkala Mayor’s Office reports.

The concert took place in the Kumuk Theater on November 16. As informed, the male choir presented a repertoire consisted of national-patriotic songs with elements of the ancient art, ecclesiastic chanting, spiritual works of the Russian Silver Age classics and modern authors.

The performance of the Valaam Monastery Choir consisted of the hymns, Easter and Russian liturgical musical compositions by Rachmaninov, Chesnokov, Trubachev, a contemporary Petersburg composer Alexander Bordakov, as well as the songs on the Great Patriotic War written by the Soviet classics - Soloviev-Sedoy, Novikov, Migulya, Tukhmanov and others.

A coherent performance  of half-forgotten songs of the wartime and well-known songs, clean and vibrant voices, a cappella, a professional work of a conductor, a wonderful vocal soloist of the choir, crazy returns of artists helped to create a wonderful and magic aura in the hall of the Kumuk Theater. The appreciative audience gave the glad-hand to every performance.

This year, the Valaam choir has already visited more than 100 cities of the country. The concert program was presented in the cities of the Crimea and the Southern Federal District, North Ossetia, Karachay-Cherkessia, Kabardino-Balkaria, Ingushetia and the Chechen Republic.

The Valaam Monastery Choir is known in many European countries. It gives concerts at the major events for the first persons of foreign states, and the first public concert of the choir took place in the ceremonial meeting of the Russian Chamber of Commerce in 2007. The creative group unites the graduates of St Petersburg State Capella Choir, Saint-Petersburg State Conservatory named after Rimsky-Korsakov and the Honored artists of the Bolshoi Theater.

The Valaam Monastery is located in the eponymous archipelago in the northern part of Lake Ladoga. It was founded more than a thousand years ago. In 1989 the holy thing was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church. In August 2005, the reconstruction was completed and was consecrated by His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II.
