New frontiers of Makhachkala trading port

Makhachkala, July 7, 2014. Makhachkala trading sea port is one of the oldest Daghestan enterprises. It provides shipment and processing of general, mineral, building and liquid cargoes as an important strategic link of the transport system between South Russia and Central Asia, Iran, Transcaucasia, and other states.

Today, the Makhachkala port includes a dry cargo harbour with a transshipment complex processing 3 million tons per year, a few berths for general cargo, bulk goods and containers processing 1.2 million tons per year, a train-ferry terminal processing 1.3 million tons, and a grain terminal processing 0.5 million tons of cargo per year.

The 6 dry cargo berths 913 meters long can handle 6 vessels at a time. They are equipped with modern cargo handling facilities, warehouses for open and covered storage designed to temporary store, stockpile, compile and reload cargos from one type of transport to another. The oil loading harbor is a specialized transshipment facility for handling light and dark oil products with a capacity of 7.9 million tons. The railway ferry is the only Russian ferry in the Caspian Sea. It processes over 20,000 cars a year.

"Today, the port is reviving. Last year, it handled 500,000 tons of dry cargo and about 5 million tons of liquid cargo. According to our forecasts, the total turnover should grow significantly by the end of this year," says CEO of the Makhachkala seaport Akhmed Gadjiyev, "Our general goals today are developing infrastructure of the transport and logistics complex, increasing cargo handling and improving service quality. To achieve these goals, we need to modernize the port and enhance the capacity of berths and terminals. The modernization will help increase the overall turnover as high as 15 million tons per year. "
