Makhachkala, June 15, 2015. This spring, Dagestan farmers laid new gardens on the area of over 1036 hectares, the Ministry of Agriculture RD informs. Of these, intensive gardens have been laid on the are over 131 hectares.

Noteworthy the gardens planting campaign in conducted under the Year of gardening declared by the Head of Dagestan in 2015. This suggests, respectively, that the plant cultivation branch of agriculture turns to be a priority one among the others. In 1960-s Dagestan gardeners used to cultivate about 60,000 fruit-bearing orchards, but in 90-s the industry rapidly declined.

Currently, the republic possesses only about 26 thousand hectares of orchards, of which fruit-bearing trees occupy nearly 21 thous. Ha.

Taking into consideration the importance of expanding the orchards, the republican authorities started an enormous volume of work on resuscitating the industry. So, for the year past, the gardeners of the republic yielded about 121 thousand tons of fruits. The new orchards were planted on the area of 1 thousand and 168 Ha, including the common gardens - more than 1 thousand 122 hectares and intensive type gardens on 45 hectares. Overall, from 2011 to 2014 Dagestan laid 5 thousand Ha of young gardens.

However, only this year in the republic it is expected to lay 1,600 hectares of new orchards. According to the experts, over time, this should lead to an increase in its own fruit production, as well as the development of canned food producing industry.
