Apart from the development of the gas industry, the republican Ministry of Energy works to improve the quality of energy supply and energy efficiency of the region. Significant efforts are aimed at increasing power generation by new generating facilities, as well as their capacity.

As of today, the existing HPPs can meet only 60% of the republic's electricity needs. In recent years the Project Office for RES under the Ministry of Energy attracted more than 75 billion rubles of private investments for implementation of projects in the field of renewable energy sources.

It is about construction of solar, wind and hydro power plants. In 2022, the development of alternative energy received a great impetus in the republic. In July, the region's first large solar power plant with a capacity of 15 MW was commissioned in Yuzhno-Sukhokumsk. It consists of 40 thousand solar modules and occupies an area of more than 30 hectares. The projected volume of electricity generation makes 20 million kWh/year, which will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 7,000 tons/year. The project created about 60 jobs during the construction period and 13 permanent jobs, as well as engaged local contractors.

The agreements between Haval and Dagestan on implementation of the project were reached at SPIEF-2021. It is planned to implement investment projects on construction of grid solar power generation facilities with a total volume of about 45 MW by 2024, as well as to commission local and distributed generation facilities using solar energy.

The total volume of investments may reach 3.5 billion rubles. Six more generating facilities are planned to be built in Dagestan by the end of 2028. This will increase electricity production by 24% or 1200 kWh per year.

The power plants will be constructed in Kizlyar, Derbent, Nogay and Karabudakhkent municipal districts. The Ministry of Energy has also managed to attract private investments for installation of wind farms with capacity up to 315 MW. The facility is planned to be commissioned in 2026. A small hydroelectric power station will also appear in Untsukulsky and Gergebelsky districts. To implement this project, a cooperation agreement was signed with RusHydro PJSC in 2022.

Besides, "Rosseti" promised to allocate about 2.9 billion rubles to improve the quality of electricity supply to consumers in Dagestan in 2023. It is worth noting that the commissioning of new solar generation facilities will contribute to the sustainable socioeconomic development of the republic, improve the quality and reliability of power supply to the consumers, as well as preserve the unique natural and climatic conditions of the region.
