Makhachkala, July 15, 2014. Derbent mayor Imam Yaraliev told Daghestan reporters about how they prepare for celebrating the 2000th anniversary of the city at a press conference today.

Firstly, Yaraliev briefed on what city Derbent is. He said it is the only ancient city with a rich history surviving its historic location. "Derbent is a cradle of 3 world religions, one of the most ancient historical monuments in the world. Here, Judaism, Christianity and Islam peacefully have coexisted for millennia. Here is the oldest Christian church - the Cross-domed church. Over 1,300 years ago, a Juma Mosque was built here," the mayor noted.

He added that currently, they have developed draft reconstruction projects of entry and exit roads to Derbent. They prepare investment sites to attract big businesses. They also consider using public-private partnerships to fund engineering infrastructure from the budget to contract with investors.

They already began reconstructing the Military Glory park – a monument has been built inside it. Yet, there’s much work to do here. They also work with the Moscow government on building the Palace of Nationalities, and with the St. Petersburg government - on cooperation in celebrating the anniversary.

Following the press conference, the reporters visited several sites currently under reconstruction.
