Makhachkala, November 18, 2014. In 2014, Daghestani winegrowers harvested more than 137,400 tons of grapes, which is 86 centners per hectare, the press service of Daghestan ministry of agriculture told RIA "Daghestan".

For the past 14 years, the total grape production in the republic has risen 2.4 times. In 2000, the yield was 58,000 tons of grapes, and this year, 86,300 tons (63% of the gross harvest) was processed.

"Given the social and economic significance of the sector, the republic's leadership pays great attention to developing viticulture and winemaking, including modernization of facilities already in place, building modern high-tech productions, and working out appropriate regulations. Among measures to stimulate development of the sector is Daghestan development priority project "Efficient agriculture" which also deals with viticulture," the source said.

Under the project, they’ve developed a brand new model of viticultural progress based on a cluster approach through establishing large agricultural holdings and involving big alcohol producers (investors) that would invest their own money in establishing a resource base - in planting vineyards. This type of management yielded good results already in the project’s first year. In 2013, they planted 1,842 hectares of new vineyards and harvested 136,400 tons of grapes.
