Makhachkala, March 19, 2014. Daghestan repeatedly produces 200,000 tons of oil and less than 500 m3 of natural gas per year, said Chief of the Laboratory of Regional Geology and Mineral Resources with the Geology Institute of Daghestan Science Centre of the Russian Academy of Science, Candidate of Geology and Mineralogy Vladimir Matsapulin at today's meeting of the Daghestan Head’s Economic Council.

The event chaired by Economic Council Chairman Abdulkhalik Gindiev brought together Daghestan Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Gassan Idrisov, 1st deputy Minister of Industry, Transport and Energy Kazbek Kandaurov, Chairman of the Committee on Industry, Transport and Communications of Daghestan National Assembly Mikhail Gashimov, and other officials.

Opening the council session, Gindiev said that the problem of using Daghestan mineral resource base while implementing Daghestan priority development projects was one of the most interesting and relevant topics. He also added that the mineral resource issue was one of the main components of the "New Industrialization" priority development project.

In his keynote report, V. Matsapulin said that rational use of mineral resources was one of the main things in solving many economic issues including GDP doubling. He also added that the use of local mineral resources was a key to improving Daghestan’s economic potential.

The speaker explained that Daghestan was one of the oldest oil and gas producing regions of Russia, but today’s level of oil and gas production is far below its potential.

Interestingly, the Institute of Geology has helped find out that Daghestan has the prospect of detecting Miocene deposits of titanium, zircon and precious metals like gold, platinum and silver.
