Makhachkala, August 1, 2020. The area of vineyards in Dagestan is scheduled to be increased by one third by 2035 - to more than 35 thousand hectares. Such results are planned to be achieved thanks to the implementation of the Strategy for the Development of Viticulture and Winemaking in the Republic of Dagestan, the Minister of Agriculture and Food of the region Abzagir Guseynov said.

"The strategy for the development of viticulture and winemaking in the Republic of Dagestan for the period up to 2035 provides for the creation of favorable conditions for bringing the production of the main types of viticulture and wine products by 2035 to the next indices: the total area of vineyards by 2035 will make more than 35 thousand hectares, an increase in 2035 in relation to 2020 will make 35.6%" - Guseynov noted.

The minister also pointed out that the implementation of the strategy envisages an increase by 50% in the gross harvest of grapes, an increase by 60% in the production of grape wine and an increase of the volume of processing of grapes of technical varieties up to 220.0 thousand tons. Besides, it is expected that more than 10 thousand hectares of the new vineyards will be planted by 2035 in the republic (an increase in new areas will make 180%.) "The production of champagne will reach 2,300 thousand decalitres that is 44% more, and the production of cognac in the republic will amount to 1,600 thousand decalitres (an increase by 61%)" - the top official added.

At the same time, Guseynov says, there are a number of problems in Dagestan that need to be solved. According to the minister, this includes the introduction of modern drip irrigation systems, as well as the construction of gravity canals, water pipelines and ensuring the construction of water storage facilities. "[It is necessary] to create agro-scientific clusters in the viticulture and wine-making sub-complex of the republic's agro-industrial complex, as well as the creation of a scientific-production complex for the production of high-quality and healthy grape planting material based on microclonal reproduction," Guseynov is quoted as saying.
