Makhachkala, October 10, 2017. The authorities of Dagestan intend to fully restore the irrigation system of the Stary Terek Canal located in Kizlyar district of the republic. The draft project of the first stage of reconstruction has been approved by specialist of the Federal autonomous institution «Main Department of State Expertise», the press service of the state body reports.

The goal is to save approx. 5 thousand hectares of fertile land for the needs of agriculture ... The work has been included into the federal target program "The development of land reclamation of agricultural land in Russia for 2014-2020".

It is scheduled to clean the canal ditch, to backfill the walls with soil and to restore gateways on a 35-rm long section. Along the entire length of the canal, the shore-strengthening sections will be returned into working condition.

The meliorative canal Stary Terek was built in 1958 to provide water to collective and state farms of Kizlyar district from part of the old and shallower riverbed of the Terek river. However, since the 60-s the channel has not been repaired. The silt has significantly slowed the water flow.

Gradually, the banks got washed out being captured with the shrubs and trees. The root system of the trees destroyed the concrete walls of the canal and the entire meliorative system of the district. As a result, the hydroelectric facilities were found to be inoperative.
