Makhachkala, March 19, 2018. Dagestan authorities have initiated the reconstruction of some irrigation network facilities located on the territory of the republic. All the works are scheduled to be finished by the beginning of the irrigation season, in early April, so that the farmers could receive water.

The day before the top officials of the republican Ministry of Irrigation and Water Resources inspected the progress of repair works at irrigation facilities in Kizilyurtovsky and Khasavyurtovsky districts.

Since November 2017, the Ministry has been conducting the large-scale works on reconstruction of Chontaulsky headwater intake, which provides water to the Talmin irrigation network. It covers the area of approx. 46 thousand hectares of farmland in 11 districts of the republic and provides water for planting of rice, corn, alfalfa and melons.

The works Chontaulsky site will also protect the villages of Chontaul and Kirovaul from seasonal flooding.

The main part of the irrigation network of Dagestan is laid in earth bed without anti-filtration coating. The lack of channeling, the unsatisfactory condition of the collector-drainage network leads to the disastrous violation of the natural groundwater circulation system, increasing their level under the irrigated lands. In these conditions, the task of the operational services of Ministry is to keep the irrigation systems in a technically sound condition.
