Makhachkala, April 8, 2015. Dagestan ministry of agriculture reports that 580 hectares of new orchards have been planted in Dagestan. This process is part of the Year of Gardening announced by Dagestan head Ramazan Abdulatipov.

By now, they have deep plowed 1,195 hectares for perennial plantings. This year, they will plant around 1,600 hectares of new orchards, 567 hectares - this spring. Currently, there are only about 26,000 hectares under gardens in Dagestan, of which slightly more than 20,000 bear fruit.

"Gardening is a traditionally critical area of Dagestan agriculture, which is of great importance for the economy, too. In some mountain and foothill areas, it is the main source of income. Today, the republic's leadership has been tasked to revive the industry. This is specifically essential in the context of developing import substitution," the source said.

In regard with it, they had adopted Dagestan state program on "Development of agriculture and regulation of markets for agricultural products, raw materials and food for 2014-2020" in 2014. The program implies increasing the area under perennial plantings up to 40,000 hectares with gross yield of fruits and berries amounting to 192,000 tons.
