The Republic of Dagestan constructs a network of modern waste sorting facilities designed to process up to 950,000 tons of municipal solid waste annually. This system forms a core part of the region's transition toward sustainable waste management. A pilot plant near Makhachkala is already operational and undergoes final commissioning, while two additional facilities are under active construction in Derbent and Khasavyurt municipal districts.

Once all three are fully launched by 2026, they will serve as an integrated backbone for the republic's waste processing, significantly reducing reliance on landfill disposal.

These facilities will utilize advanced sorting technologies—including automated bag openers, trommel screens and optical separators—to recover valuable secondary materials such as plastics, metals, glass and paper. The sorted materials will then be baled and transferred to specialized recycling enterprises.

According to the Russian Environmental Operator (REO), this infrastructure is essential for achieving the federal "Ecology" project’s target of cutting landfill disposal by half and reintegrating recyclables into the economy.
