The rice production in Dagestan has increased 4.5 times in 10 years, Sharip Sharipov, the first deputy Minister of Agriculture of the Republic of Dagestan says. As to the top official, in 2013, Dagestan produced 34.4 thousand tons of rice. Last year, this volume increased to 156.5 thousand tons, thanks to an increase in planted areas from 9.9 to 33 thousand hectares.
Sharipov also mentioned a significant financial support for the sector from the regional budget over the past three years, amounting to about RUB 1 billion, aimed at developing rice farming. Thanks to joint efforts by federal and regional authorities as well as agricultural producers, almost 11 thousand new rice systems will be built in 2017-2023 and 21 thousand existing systems will be reconstructed. At the same time, most of the rice produced in Dagestan will stay in the region to meet domestic needs, given the ongoing export ban.
