Daghestani weightlifters win 5 medals of Russia championships

Grozny, August 26, 2014.  Daghestani team won a gold, 3 silvers and a bronze at the Russian weightlifting championships held in Grozny 19-25 August, says the website of the Russian Weightlifting Federation. The event brought together 178 weightlifters from 31 Russian regions – 68 women competing in 7 weights (48, 53, 58, 63, 69, 75, and +75 kg) and 110 men contesting in 8 weights (56, 62, 69, 77, 85, 94, 105, and +105 kg).

Here, 13 athletes were representing Daghestan. Felix Halibekov won in the 69 kg weight - on the second day, he made 306 kg (140 in the snatch, plus 166 kg in the clean and jerk) in the double-event. Hegani Ismailov, Arsen Boraganov, and Victoria Semenova were the silver medal winners. Ismailov won with a total of 271 kg (118 kg + 153 kg) in the 62 kg weight, Boraganov made 345 kg (160 kg + 185 kg) in the 77 kg weight, and Semenova was the only Daghestani lady-winner with her 222 kg (94 kg + 128 kg) in the 75 kg weight. Daghestan’s Asali Abdulgashumov placed third in the 63 kg weight with a total of 270 kg (120 kg + 150 kg).

On the whole, Daghestani sporstmen performed better than a year ago (in 2013, they won 3 golds and a silver). Now, the republic is applying for hosting the next, pre-Olympic Russian weightlifting championships.
