Boxer Radjab Butaev wins Olympic license

Makhachkala, April 13, 2015. Russian champion-2014, Dagestani boxer Radjab Butaev won the sixth team tournament in the World Series of Boxing (WSB) thus earning a license for the Olympic Games-2016 in Rio de Janeiro, athlete’s coach Akhmed Zhanaev told RIA Dagestan.

In the latest series taking place in London on April 9, the Russian team won the UK 4: 1. In his fight in the 69 kg weight, the Dagestani boxer defeated Scott Fitzgerald (47-48, 48-47, 49-46).

"The key task is fulfilled - Radjab has qualified for the Olympics. He was collected in all his six bouts in WSB and he deserved the Olympic license," Zhanaev commented.

Prior to his fight with the British, Butaev defeated Chinese Wei Liu, Mexican Marvin Cabrero Vergara, Ukrainian Oleg Zubenko, Algerian Eunice Nemushi, and Cuban Olympic champion Ronel Sotolongo .

Before Butaev, boxers Misha Aloyan (52 kg) Armen Zakarian (64 kg) and Alexei Egorov (91 kg) won Olympic licenses for the Russian national team. The Russians retain chances of winning Olympic tickets in other weights in WSB and APB tournaments. E.g., another Dagestani Magomed Omarov is close to qualifying for the Olympics in the 91 kg weight.
