Tsakhur celebrates 940th anniversary of madrassas

Makhachkala, July 21, 2015. The village of Tsakhur (Rutulskiy district of Dagestan) celebrates the 940th anniversary of madrasa, the oldest Muslim institution on the territory of the modern Russian Federation. The head of Tsakhur national-cultural autonomy in Moscow Raphael Aliyev commented on the event.

"In the Middle Ages,Tsakhur became a starting point for the spread of Islam in the Northern Caucasus. It was here that in 1075 the vizier of the Seljuk state Nizam al-Mulk founded the first university in the Caucasus such as madrasas (opened 13 years before the famous university in the Italian city of Bologna, which is considered the oldest in Europe), where scientists and teachers trained and translated the books of Muslim scholars into local languages.

Tsakhurs who trained in Syria and Iraq and after graduating fr om school returned home to spread the knowledge of Islam in the Caucasus became the first professors”.

Tsakhur madrassas created the first two-volume dictionary of Arabic "Al Garibayn" there remain grave scientists: the mausoleum of Sheikh Sultan Mahmoud, the mausoleum of Sultan Emir Sheikh (Mishlesh), the mausoleum of Sheikh Abdulvahab Effendi (Lekit).

Celebrations in honor of the anniversary held in madrassas Rutul district, wh ere today live and Rutuls Tsakhurs Azerbaijanis and Laks, Lezgins and Avars. Besides, the area is known by early Christian artifacts (the tomb of the Apostle Elisha with. Gelmets), Jewish and Muslim penetration in the land.
