Russian culture celebration "Pancake Week" is held in Makhachkala

Makhachkala, February 27, 2014. The 11th Daghestani festival of Russian culture "Pancake Week" was held in the Gorky Russian Drama Theater in Makhachkala. The event as part of the Daghestan state program "Supporting the Russians living in and returning to Daghestan 2014-2017" is dedicated to the Year of Culture.

The celebration was organized by Daghestani governmental commission on Russian-speaking population, the ministry of culture, its Daghestani house of folk, the Makhachkala administration, and municipal administrations of Kizlyarskiy, Kaspiyskiy, Daghestanskie Ogni, Derbentskiy, Izberbashskiy, Kizlyarskiy and Tarumovskiy districts.

The festivity began with an entertainment program in the lobby of the theater – traditionally, there was a merry pancake fair featuring clowns, buffoons, greeters, and served tables. Further, all participants moved into the hall to see the best Daghestan artistic groups and ensembles.

Artistic groups and performers from Kizlyarskiy and Tarumovskiy districts, Kizlyar, Kaspiysk, Derbent, Daghestanskie Ogni and Makhachkala, and professional groups – the State Terek Cossack ensemble, the State Song Theatre "Gislam", the State Puppet Theatre, and the Russian Drama Theatre came to Makhachkala to celebrate the day.

Daghestani festival of Russian culture "Pancake Week" has been held in Daghestan since 2000. Its main objectives are to preserve Russian culture, to promote the cultural heritage of the peoples of Daghestan, to strengthen peace, good neighborly relations, international cultural cooperation in the region, to maintain continuity of ethnic traditions, and to patriotically, aesthetically, and morally educate the younger generation.
