Rescuers to hold large-scale civil defense exercise in Daghestan

Makhachkala, October 3, 2014. On October 4, Daghestani rescuers will hold a large-scale civil defense exercise for all federal agencies, municipalities, emergency services and the public, the press service of the Russian Emergencies Ministry’s civil defense department reported RIA "Dagestan".

It’s a nation-wide exercise aimed at improving the practical skills of civil defense seniors and testing the vigilance of various agencies and services and their preparedness for disaster management. The exercise will be coordinated by the National Crisis Management Center of the Russian Emergencies Ministry.

The exercise legend implies multiple many man-made and natural emergencies. Each region will consider hypothetical emergencies typical of the area: wildfires, earthquakes, radiation and chemical hazard. It will be a 2-step exercise. The first step is warning authorities of the exercise and convening senior officials to exchange information in the field of civil defense. The second step will be addressing the practical issues.

The staff will deploy and put on standby points issuing personal protective gear and housing the evacuated population, field feeding points, posts of radiation and chemical control, and firefighting headquarters. Rescuers will be trained to find victims, handle debris, and provide medical assistance.

The exercise includes centralized notifying the population on radio and TV about events held as part of the exercise.
