Makhachkala, July 16, 2014. Famous Russian traveler and explorer Evgeniy Gvozdev who sailed the world alone a few times is going to be memorized in Daghestan. Daghestan Tourism Committee discussed the issue with members of Daghestan Public Chamber, officials from the Russian Geographical Society, other public organizations, and Gvozdev’s friends, July 15.

Chairman of the Russian Geographical Society’s Daghestan office Eldar Eldarov said, "This year, it’s the 80th anniversary of Evgeniy Gvozdev – the only Dagehstan yachtsman who has sailed the world alone a few times under the Russian flag, putting off from its territory, on yachts built in Russia. He is the only solo yachtsman in the world to have sailed round the globe on a pleasure "bound-micro" dinghy. Gvozdev remains the only sailor who has traveled through the Strait of Magellan in a midget homemade boat named "Sahid." It was hard to believe that a tiny yacht only 3.7 meters long could go round the world!

October 13-20, 1979, for the first time in the Caspian sailing history, Gvozdev had traveled Makhachkala - Bautino - Shevchenko - Krasnovodsk - Baku – Makhachkala alone in his homemade boat. By then, the yacht was named "Getan" (the first letters of his surname, name, his wife’s name Tatiana, his son’s name Alexander, and his daughter’s name Natalia. His unique story deserves to be memorized," Eldarov said.

Having listened to all the speakers, the chairman of Daghestan Tourism Committee Magomed Issayev proposed to develop a documented action plan of perpetuating the memory of Gvozdev, appoint responsible officials for the working areas, split responsibilities among all officials involved to further submit a formal request to Daghestani leadership.
