Makhachkala, June 20, 2014. On June 19, Plenipotentiary Envoy of the Russian President to the North Caucasus Federal District Sergei Melikov arrived in Daghestan for an official visit, the press service of Daghestani Head and government’s administration told RIA "Daghestan".  Russian President Vladimir Putin appointed his new plenipotentiary envoy in the NCFD in May, 2014.

Welcoming Malikov, Daghestani Head said he was set to cooperation on all issues: "I am glad that the person who knows the region, who has been defending its interests, a real Russian patriot, has been appointed the plenipotentiary envoy to the Russian president in the North Caucasus Federal District".

Speaking about the situation in Daghestan, Malikov said that in order to stabilize it and let Daghestan successfully develop, they need to apply effective political measures. He also outlined several key areas of work, assuring that Daghestan will be provided with comprehensive assistance. In the first place, it was about the socio-economic situation full of problems asking for urgent solutions. Melikov noted that priority projects and Daghestan development programs were really aimed at stabilization in Daghestan society, and offered to facilitate their implementation.

The second issue to discuss was fighting extremism.

"There is a serious problem with religious interrelations. There may be some misguided persons, so we need to maintain a constructive dialogue with them. The thing is different with those who have taken up arms – we should deal with their cases separately. The 3rd issue is territorial disputes. However, as far as I know from my previous work, this problem is not as acute in Daghestan. We are ready to provide you with all possible assistance and support in this area," Melikov assured.
