Legend of Turkish football Hakan Shukur faces jail for insulting Erdogan

According to lawyers of the President of Turkey, Hakan Şükür posted an insulting address against the Head of State in Twitter. Istanbul prosecutor demands to sentence one of the most famous Turkish football Hakan Şükür to four-year imprisonment for insulting Turkish President Taiip Erdogan, Interfax reports.

Shukur is a former striker of Istanbul "Galatasaray" and the Turkish national team participant. In June 2011, he was elected to the Turkish Parliament from the ruling Justice and Development Party, but in 2013 left its ranks.

Erdogan's lawyers have filed a lawsuit against the footballer, stating that the player posted on his Twitter page a message with insults against the President of Turkey. Shukur denies the charges against him in the indictment.

The famous Turkish climber Nasukh Mahruki who first of the Turks conquered the "Seven Summits" is also accused of insulting Erdogan. Earlier, dozens of lawsuits on charges of insulting Erdogan had been filed against the Turkish citizens, mainly the journalists.
