Makhachkala, May 27, 2015. A Poetry Theatre (from Pushkin to Gamzatov ...) is planned to open in Makhachkala in June, a source in the republican ministry of culture told RIA Dagestan.

The initiative to establish a facility like this in the republic belongs to Dagestan Head Ramazan Abdulatipov. The main goal of the facility is to attract public attention to literature and reading, increase readers’ interest in poetry, revive the tradition of poetic performance, expand cultural contacts, and promote Dagestani poetry beyond the republic.

The ground of the theater will be used as an exhibition hall. A stage has already been installed on the first floor. The theatre is almost completely staffed. The theater courtyard has been put in order. They have restored the monument to Pushkin, also having in mind to erect another monument – to poet Rasul Gamzatov – in front of it.

Creating a new scenic genre – the poetry theater – is associated with the name of Peteris Petersons, chief director of the State Academic Theatre of Latvia. He had implemented his theatre concept in two areas: innovative classical productions and creating a new stage genre - the poetic theater. Petersons based his first performances on poems by Vladimir Mayakovsky, Chaksa, and other authors. Establishing a poetry theatre proved to be a unique art phenomenon not only in Latvia, but in the whole Soviet Union.
